A future together

Here on the Paganella, we were born and brought up on the mountains. We’ve always been shepherds, wood cutters, farmers, vintners. Our great-grandparents and grandparents thought this location could lend itself well to tourism, too.

What started as an experiment became a place where many of you choose to spend their holidays – and, sometimes, even a part of your life.

Lakes, mountain summits, forests, vineyards, and paths are part of our DNA. They were passed down to us. We want to keep them as they are today for future generations.

We preserve them as best we can by doing what we do best: contributing to local associations and groups, investing in innovation, and keeping our traditions alive. By doing so, we keep our villages alive for people who live, work or visit them.

We know there is still a lot to do. That is why, over the last years, our community has asked itself some hard questions, leading to the creation of the Future Lab. We’ve organised meetings, working groups, and brainstorming workshops to answer those questions.

Frame&Work has documented our journey, showing snapshots of our everyday life and interviews with mountain experts such as Reinhold Messner, Luca Mercalli, and Donatella Bianchi.

These are the stories of a community which shares values, where tourism is key to plan and develop our future.

All these conversations helped us understand what we do well – and where there is room for improvement. We came up with 10 values to guide us in our everyday decisions and future projects. And we want to share them with you.

1. Quality over quantity

Tourism’s constant and linear growth has characterised our location over the last years. However, it isn’t something we can guarantee forever. That’s why we’ll focus on creating value. We’ll replace volume – arrivals and overnight stays – with high-quality tourist experiences and create benefits for the local community.

2. A sustainable future

We’ll look towards the future. We won’t be distracted by short-term plans and immediate benefits. Creating long-term benefits for the local community will always inform our choices regarding our offer.

3. “Season-free” destination

We all know how in the future the winter season alone won’t be able to support mountain tourism. We aim to become “season free”, ensuring the destination can tap into its full potential and welcome tourists 365 days a year, rather than focusing on peak seasons.

4. Tourism should benefit the entire community

We believe tourism should strike a balance between the destination and the locals, offering opportunities for a better and more prosperous life to everyone. Our community will always have the last word on its future.

5. A well-managed tourism offer

We recognise how much tourism means for our community. That’s why we don’t want to exclusively rely on it. We’ll strive to become a destination which consciously manages its tourism offer, leveraging its benefits to grow and enrich the local economy’s stakeholders.

6. Our values bring together the guests, destination, and residents

Tourism shouldn’t just be a transaction between guests and local businesses. Both need to share values, ideas, and experiences so that tourism can evolve and grow in harmony with nature and the community, contributing to improve the destination’s quality of life.

7. Future generations – our pioneers and innovators

We believe in our youth. We want to remove the obstacles that may stop them from living here. We shouldn’t see them just as our workforce, rather as our future leaders, innovators, business people – we should create the conditions to make their life and development easier.

8. Pursuing climate neutrality

We know what our responsibility is. We understand the need to contribute towards the fight against climate change and ensure tourism can become sustainable. To achieve this, we aim to innovate our local offer, becoming a role model for outsiders, and embodying a sustainable development model.

9. Preserving our heritage and boosting our sense of belonging

We believe that Dolomiti Paganella is something more than just a simple destination or a group of different villages. Our community is made of people whose lives are shaped by the mountains. Our identity is deeply rooted in the mountains, preceding even our connection with tourism. Our lifestyle is guided by values such as adaptability, innovation, and tradition, which bridge the past, present, and future.

10. People are key

People mean everything. People who’ve lived here their entire lives, visitors who share our home or newcomers who start a new chapter of their lives here. That’s why we believe that developing tourism goes hand in hand with creating a place which is attractive for residents, visitors, and new, talented people from outside the region or Italy, who understand our community’s vision, and decide to build their future here.

This is the path we have decided to walk. When you choose us for your holidays, you choose to join us on this path.

It’s a pact we all sign up to, as we all share these mountains and are all equally responsible for them and the life which inhabits them.
